FUNDRAISERS from a Radcliffe community group raised more than £300 to help combat dementia.

Friendly Faces founder Cherella Young and volunteer Margaret Yates were among the 6,000 people who took part in the Manchester Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.

The 10k walk in Heaton Park, on September 17, was part of a nationwide initiative to raise money for a world without dementia.

The group, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, was set up last year to help reduce social isolation among Radcliffe's elderly residents and will be holding another fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Society next week.

On Saturday, October 8, there will be a karaoke night from 7.30pm at Radcliffe Borough Football Club. Entry is £5 and all proceeds will go to the charity.

Ms Young said: "I was absolutely knackered by the end of it, but it was a great day.

"We are organising another fundraiser soon, with a karaoke night at the football club.

"We are all dementia friends and have learned a lot more about dementia through doing that.

"A few of our Friendly Faces members have dementia so it is a subject that is very close to our hearts."

Friendly Faces will also be bidding for up to £1,000 in funding at the #LoveRadcliffe roadshow, in Bolton Road Park, this Saturday as part of 'The Pitch', a Dragons Den-style event in which a variety of projects have been invited to put forward their ideas for the town.

She added: "Everything is going really well for the group, it is an exciting time for us.

"We have got Ambition for Ageing on board and we are hoping to get some investment that means we can get some laptops and tablets and then have a tutor come in to do some IT work with us.

"We might even have the chance to expand the group into different places around the area as well, which would be great."
