BURY boxer Scott Quigg returns to the ring on Saturday vowing to power his way back to the top.

The 28-year-old has been out of action since suffering a broken jaw in his first professional defeat to Carl Frampton in February – a loss that also saw him lose his WBA world super-bantamweight crown.

But having been given the all-clear to resume his career, Quigg is relishing his comeback against Mexican Jose Cayetano as he moves up a division to featherweight on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's heavyweight title defence at a packed Manchester Arena.

He told Bury Times: "I can’t wait to get back in the ring.

"It’s been a long time – I haven’t fought since February.

"It will have been eight months out by the time I get back in the ring on Saturday.

"It was hard being out but we have passed that now.

"I have been in the gym for the last four months and everything is absolutely fine now.

"With Anthony Joshua being top of what is a packed card on the night, it will be a full Manchester Arena again and having 20,000 in there will be special – I have had so many great nights there.

"Obviously the last one, against Frampton, didn’t go my way.

"I was devastated after that defeat.

"I was always brought up with the mantra there is no place for runners-up.

"Some people will disagree with that but I stand by it – no one remembers the runner-up.

"That is why I am training so hard to get back to the level I was at before that defeat."

Cayetano has four losses to his name and has only fought outside of his native Mexico twice before.

But Quigg is not taking his opponent lightly as he looks to work his back to a possible rematch against Frampton.

He added: "Jose has mixed in good company, taken (Leo) Santa Cruz the distance and he's coming off a good win against (Alexis) Santiago.

"It's a fight that I have to put in a top performance in and that's what I am aiming to do.

"Moving up to featherweight was always in my plans.

"I have physically matured and am a bit bigger now.

"I do believe people will see the best of me at featherweight.

"The one I want is Frampton if he comes through his fight against Santa Cruz, or if Leo wins I would love that as well – we tried to make that fight when we were both super bantamweight.

"But I need to get this one won, finish the year on a high and then 2017 is all about making an assault on a world title."

Quigg is naturally champing at the bit to get back inside the ropes but trainer Joe Gallagher is keen to make sure he does not let his eagerness to make up for lost time get the better of him at the weekend.

Gallagher said: "It’s a new weight division and he has to rebuild again.

"The division he is going to is like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire the amount of world-class fighters there are at featherweight.

"Anyone in the top 20 in what is a very hard division could be a world champion.

"It will be hard for Scott to get a world title opportunity.

"But that is a different level at the moment and there is no use embarrassing ourselves talking about that yet.

"Scott has to get two or three fights under his belt against notable names and forcing himself into a world title picture."

Gallagher admits Quigg's confidence took a big knock when he lost the titanic clash against Belfast's Frampton.

But he think it has helped the Bury star refocus and he hopes it will also make his man a better boxer.

The Bolton-based trainer added: "Scott was always adamant he wouldn’t lose.

"He lives the right life, eats right, trains right and has that siege mentality that he does everything right.

"The fight with Frampton showed Scott that no matter how much you do things right, nothing is ever guaranteed.

"I think there is a more chilled attitude with him now – he is a bit less intense and more laid back about things.

"I think he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders going into the Frampton fight whereas I don’t think he has that now.

"No one wants to lose but it has happened now and it is about moving on.

"He needs a good few rounds in there to get his confidence and his mojo back."
