BOLTON FM is certainly on the right wavelength when it comes to increasing its audience and achieving set targets.

Now, in its fifth year, the multi-award-winning and non-profit community radio station is brought to its listeners by about 100 people every week.

Bolton FM, in Ashburner Street, prides itself on what it describes as “new, unique and innovative radio” with a relevant and local feel. All shows are produced and presented by volunteers, and the station offers the town an exclusive local broadcasting service that promotes Bolton events and focuses on local news and sport.

Relationships have been established with organisations such as Bolton Council, Bolton at Home, Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group, Bolton College and local and national charities to ensure that Bolton FM is deeply involved in activities centred on the town.

Since its launch, the station has moved base, refurbished and expanded its existing home to the extent that its offices and studios are the envy of the world of community radio. Its average number of live broadcasting hours each week is 96 and the average number of original programming hours each week is 133. Its total number of volunteers is 97. The total number of volunteer hours each week is 340.

Keith Harris, business development manager, said: “We continue to demonstrate how community radio positively impacts the lives of our listeners. Firstly, by raising the profile and awareness of local and national charities and community groups that support the people of Bolton. Secondly, some volunteers move on to further education or employment as a result of volunteering and training with us.”
