A stretch of one of the busiest motorways in the region has finally re-opened.

Commenting on the news that the Thelwall Viaduct on the M6 is open, a spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "We would like to thank drivers for their patience today.

"We hope drivers who were forced to take diversions or delay their journeys will appreciate that the safety of drivers and their passengers is our priority.

"With only slow improvement in wind conditions and very high gusts of winds continuing throughout the morning and early afternoon, we felt it was impossible to re-open Thelwall Viaduct until we were satisfied conditions had improved sufficiently."

Even though the motorway has now reopened the Highways Agency is urging drivers to take care along exposed areas and cut their speed when crossing the viaduct as wind speeds are reducing only slowly.

Drivers are advised to drive sensibly, heed warning signs, be aware of other vehicles and allow extra braking distance.
