ONE in 10 hospitality workers have been attacked by customers after asking them to stop smoking.

A survey of 5,000 employees showed many had been threatened or physically attacked since the smoking ban came into force in England in the summer.

Recruitment website Caterer.com said its research showed that staff in bars and restaurants were suffering "shocking" levels of violence.

One worker said a customer put a belt around his neck and tried to strangle him after being told he could not smoke, while another was threatened with a knife after asking a young woman to put out a cigarette.

Laurence Owen of Caterer.com said: "The level of violence experienced by some people when trying to enforce the ban with customers is shocking."

In spite of the threat of violence, nearly four out of five hospitality staff said they were happier at work now smoking had been banned. A similar number said they felt healthier since the ban.

We are told by the police that we should tackle CRIMINALS, but to phone them.
Health workers and anybody else should not tackle these serious criminals, but phone the police or the smoking detectives.

There's only 850 places left in the prisons, soon be full. We must remove these dangers to society.

A really pathetic article from the BN. Unsubstantiated figues, and pure hyperbole. These so called "journalists" at the BN must be really bored/boring.

we are told that the crime rate has gone down, but if 5,000 employees have been threatened or attacked, then surely the crime rate must have shot up. I would like to know who makes up these figures.

I don't think the figures are unsubstantiated. The article clearly quotes a survey by caterer.com

When I was young , I went to see my doctor after the latest health scare ( you always think you've got whatever it is), and he told me that it wasn't good for me to live my life in fear worrying about something that might never happen.

So I only go to the doctor when there is something wrong with me that I can't fix. Like the recurring virus I had 23 years ago.

The level of violence exibited by smokers when asked does not suprise me. They are drug adicts and will suffer if the drug is withdrawn. It is the smokers own fault they are in that situation. No one forced them to start smoking, they all made that choice. Now they are getting bitter and twisted when the can't satisfy their drug adiction. The courts should take this seriously and send these people to prison. Health Authorities should send people home without treatment if they asult anyone. Smokers must realise that if anything the places they can smoke within the law will be reduced in the future. Patches may help to reduce smokers desire to use workers and members of the public a punch bag to relieve the frustration of withdraw from an adictive drug.

October 2007
Secret cig lock-ins at rebel bars
By Fiona May
Rebel pub landlords are holding secret lockins for smokers.

The illegal cig sessions - similar to booze lockins when England had the most restrictive drinking laws in Europe - are increasing as the autumn weather arrives following the July 1 smoking ban.

One landlord of a remote country pub in Suffolk said defiantly: "I am a smoker and a lot of my regulars are smokers so during normal hours we are forced to stand outside.

"But I am not going to send them out on cold dark nights for a fag.

"So just as we used to have lock-ins for a late drink, I am now doing them for a late smoke."

The most defiant landlords are in Yorkshire, where 5 per cent of licensees have refused to impose the ban despite the threat of court action and big fines.

This is refreshing.

John, Richmond says...

If we want the law to protect us then we must all observe the law even if we disagree with it. Bad law can be changed. Every law ever passed restricts the freedom of the individual. We are not allowed by the law to kill each other, or steal anothers property. How can any one argue that they want this type of law enforced to protect them and then break laws they don't like? We need laws to regulate our actions, which benifits every one. The more complex society becomes the more laws will be needed to ensure things run smothly. If smokers, who I prefer to refer to as Junkies, as that is what they are, will not comply with the law then they must face the consequences. The police and local authorities should raid these Smoking "lock ins" as a matter of urgency, prosecute all involved and revoke the licence. The vast majority of the public including smokers like the benifits the Health Act has brought to pubs etc. So come on you smokers, get real and realise that as time goes by the public places where smoking is allowed will slowly be reduced. You will be swiming against the tide if you try to oppose this.
