Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

Unions keep fighting for more holidays

Union leaders today pledged to continue campaigning for more bank holidays for UK workers, despite new holiday entitlements introduced this year.

The TUC said this year's Christmas Day and Boxing Day would be the first that "Scrooge" bosses would not be able to count against the minimum four weeks' paid holidays every worker is entitled to receive.

Officials praised the Government for closing the "loophole" as it announced a staged increase of extra holidays up to April, 2009.

The new right also means that staff who work on a bank holiday will now get an extra day's leave on top of their four-week minimum entitlement.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "This is another victory for union campaigning.

"No-one should forget that when employer organisations and Euro-sceptics talk about red tape and burdens on business, they mean holiday rights such as these.

"But the campaigning goes on. We still want UK workers to have more bank holidays to catch up with the European average and we are backing a new Community Day bank holiday in October that will encourage community and volunteer activity."

Employment relations minister Pat McFadden said: "These changes will help bring some extra Christmas cheer to millions of people who have worked hard all year and deserve a break to relax and spend time with their families and friends."

Hey Sun,
it would help if you spelled the word RECESSION correctly before trying to predict the economy for the coming year.
Even if we were to have a recession there is little evidence to suggest that penalising peoples holidays would avert a possible period of economic downturn.
We still have one of the lowest number of holidays in europe,so come on lets stand up for workers rights for a change.
The pendulum has swung far too much in the favour of the greedy employer, who rewards themself with Bonus,s,Inflation busting pay rises and executive holiday benefits.
Oh, and these never cause inflation do they!

Thank you for correcting me. I'm sure I will sleep better tonight in knowledge that no one has misunderstood my post.

The word recession should should not be uttered too loud, less we all believe in this and talk ourselves into a real recession, the likes of which we haven't seen for almost three decades!

Why don't they do the same as Nederlands and other countries....

Set dates for the BH's and if they fall on a Weekend then that's where it falls and NOT moved to the next nearest weekday!!!

Keith, we have entered recession with regards to the credit crunch, fall in house prices and fall in number of first time buyers!!! The next step is a reduction in manufacturing, whats left of it anyway, and job losses rather than jobless reduction (give that 2 more months to start kicking in!!!)

in my country, the day the BH falls is the day it happens, sat and sun alike and tough luck. Sun Tzu, the wise goddess, speaks words of wisdom. With brown and his bunch of balloons, aided and abetted by the moronic unions, a recession is just around the corner, unless the pople of britain wake up and organise civil unrest first. How much longer are the people going to sit back and endure the communistic policies of this government? Remember, the original labour party, not this shadow of a party we have today, was formed as the socialist (read communist) party following the formation in the USSR in 1916/17, and many of their policies have remained; rule by the iron hand without dissention nor discussion. Get rid of this scum now.

I used to think we did not have enough vacation when I was living in England - try America with 10 days vacation a year and only 5 bank holidays; if you are lucky!

Berushka, the Labour Party was actually formed in 1906, well before the Soviet Revolution, and the British Communist Party was proscribed (banned) from joining it. If you're going to lecture us on British history get your facts right.
