A BOLTON band billed as "one to watch" have released a poignant video in support of Unicef and its work to help victims of war.

Yiyan recorded Place of Nowhere to support the relief effort of the charity in Syria and will donate all proceeds from the track to the cause.

The band, made up of singer and guitarist Alex Brierley, bassist Martin Ramsden, drummer Sam Davies and lead guitarist Conor Lusher, recorded the music in Alex's bedroom before making the video, which features hard-hitting footage of the war-torn country.

The band will play the song, along with other self-penned material, at the Railway Venue in Bromley Cross on Friday, August 14.

Alex, aged 18, from Horwich, said: "We're really hope that people like the track and will download the song as all the money made from it is going straight to Unicef."

The lads met in college and decided to form a band — but never thought it would become anything serious.

Alex said: "We didn't start out to take ourselves too seriously. At first we were just a bunch of mates that wanted to have a jam together. But after a while we all decided that we should be a proper band.

"Our name comes from the drummer Stan. His middle name is Welsh, Iain, so we decided to use that but changed it slightly to Yiyan.

"I've been writing songs for about three years and I record a lot of material in my room at home. I'm also a producer. The two songs Place of Nowhere and Opening Doors were both done in the studio in my bedroom.

"I've been playing music since I was about six years old. I started having piano lessons because I saw my dad playing and wanted to do it myself. After that I picked up a guitar and did a bit of drumming, which is how I got into producing music. Eventually when I went into high school I realised that I could sing too, so started writing my own songs. I've just finished sixth form at Canon Slade so am now dedicating all my time to the band.

The band have already scooped a management deal and are hoping to get signed in the future.

Alex said: "We sent our material to Mike, our manager, and he was impressed and said he would look after us. He's been advising us since and we've been rehearsing with him for about six months in preparation for gigs this summer.

"We've done a festival in Preston called Revival and also recorded a BBC Introducing gig for BBC Radio Lancashire. I think it went really well — we got a really good reaction from the audience and the show should be broadcast soon."

Before they go anywhere else they are treating their hometown to a gig at the Railway Venue.

Alex said: "We're really excited about playing there — it's got a great reputation. We'll be playing a 10 to 15 song set and we can't wait. I've not been there before but I have heard how good it is.

"We have been doing a lot of stage work too, we like to tell jokes and we move about a lot. We're certainly not boring to watch. We do a bit of fun rock and pop, so it's quite a mix. We've all got completely different music tastes so it all makes for a nice eclectic sound."
