FROM blues to uplifting beats, a new sound will soon be heard on the streets of Bolton.

A new night of live music is being launched in the town for jazz and blues lovers.

Musicians from around the UK will be heading to Harvey’s Cafe Bar for the Sunday evening sessions which start on September 25 and run once a month until December.

The event has been set up by the team behind the Live from Worktown Festival which started in 2014 to showcase the work of local poets.

Organiser Dave Morgan said: “Rather than having a festival, as we did not get the funding,we are running a programme of events and decided to include a season of jazz.

“It was something Bolton has never had before and and that’s where Harvey’s came in and offered to open on Sunday for us.

“We don’t have a community arts centre in Bolton or a dedicated space to perform, but we have a lot of musicians in the area. We are trying to fill a gap and try something new.”

The season will start with a tribute to the legendary jazz figure Miles Davis, with a performance of Kind of Blue - the biggest selling jazz album of all time - by some of Manchester’s most acclaimed musicians, including tenor saxophonist Dean Masser, Neil Yates on trumpet and pianist John Ellis.

On October 30, contemporary group, The Jamil Sheriff Trio, have chosen to launch their new album with a performance in the town.

The group is led by Bolton-born pianist Jamil Sheriff, alongside drummer Dave Walsh and Pete Turner on the double bass.

Seven-time British Blues Awards Finalist and three-time European Blues Awards nominee Kyla Brox takes centre stage on November 20.

The daughter of legendary blues singer Victor Brox will be performing with guitarist Danny Blomeley.

A final evening will see a twist on some classic Christmas tunes as Alan Taylor takes to the stage for a Quartet Christmas Special on December 11. performing with Kyran Matthews on tenor sax, Danny Wellens on keys and Josh Brierley on bass.

Dave added: “If we can demonstrate there’s an interest and a demand and the venue works we will seriously consider putting together a jazz festival or future programme.”

Doors open at 7.30pm at Harvey’s Cafe Bar in Mawdsley Street. Tickets cost £6.50 in advance or £8 on the door, with season tickets available at £23.
