WHILE most of those with fond memories of the Roaring ‘20s are no longer with us, a new production will be bringing the era back to vibrant life.

Back then, the dance craze of the Charleston had to compete for attention with Bolton Wanderers who, believe it or not, won the FA Cup three times in a decade.

Now Adlington Music and Arts Society is giving audiences a chance to visit the era with an outing to see Broadway musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The Wanderers may no longer be in sight of major success, but the popular musical continues to be a winning formula.

Joe Simmons, society secretary, said: “Millie has everything – humour, colour, zip, subterfuge, style, romance and scintillating dance routines – even sub-titles for those unfamiliar with Mandarin.

“Whichever way you look at it, this show provides a vibrant insight into what very few of us experienced first-hand and is guaranteed to induce a feeling of having missed out on some seriously innovative choreography.

“For those who cannot wait for their weekly fix of the latest creations by the country’s finest choreographers, fear not - Adlington Music and Arts Society are endeavouring to persuade the BBC to suspend Strictly Come Dancing for one week to facilitate attendance.

“A reply is eagerly awaited.”

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical based on the 1967 film of the same name and tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who goes to New York City to marry for money instead of love.

She finds herself embracing the “flapper” lifestyle in the Big Apple before stumbling upon a white slavery ring.

The comedy-cum-musical is a Tony Award winner and Adlington has its own award-winner for its staging.

Taking on the lead role is 18-year-old Rebecca Crookson who won the Bolton Amateur Theatre Societies award for Best Actress in a Musical.

The show is directed by Jackie Creer, with choreography by Heather Hodgson, and runs from October 25 to 29, from 7.15pm, at Adlington Community Centre, Railway Road.

Tickets are £10, to book call 07799 486 876.
