BANDS The Violators and The Drones will be headlining this year's Bolton Punx Picnic.

The popular 80s scene is recreated in the town next month with established bands and young bands taking to the stage for the popular event, which returns for its second year.

The festival on June 16 has been organise by Punkboot Promotions, set up by Martin Unsworth and Angelina Johnson, to raise the profile of grassroots punk and Oi! Bands.

"We’ve been busy with the arrangements for the annual Punx Picnic and we’re pleased with the progress, " said Martin, "The line-up is superb again this year and we’re almost sold out of tickets, but people can still pay on the door until we’re full."

Punk fans will be able to relive the era in Queens Park with a picnic before the music takes to the stage — indoors and outdoors — at the Alma Inn from late afternoon

Martin added: “We have an exceptional line-up that supports grass roots punk and oi music.

"Headlining the main outside stage are The Violators and headlining the inside stage are The Drones.

"Both are old established bands with young bands like The Scumbrians and Half Charge on the same bill, that are the next generation of punk.

"All in all, 14 bands will play on the day with interludes from the punk minstrel himself Paul Carter and punk poetry from Eagle Spits and Rachel Joy, so something for everyone."

Last summer’s event attracted more than 60 people to the picnic and more than 200 to the live music at the Bradshawgate venue.

Angelina said: "We’ve been in constant contact with the bands and worked on putting together a limited-edition compilation CD and accompanying booklet which contains band biographies and other information on each band that played last year and this year.

"The CD will be released for pre-sale before the picnic and will be on sale at the picnic.

"We wanted to mark both events with a memento, something tangible that served as reminder of each band, and something that helped in the promotion of their music and style to others."

The CD is eighty minutes of Punk and Oi with some new tracks, some old tracks, and some unreleased tracks, which Martin described as "testament to the hard work that bands put into supporting the Punk and Oi scene."

He said: "Bands have been fantastic and responsive to the CD, it’s great for them to get some new and unreleased material out there.

"We have been blown away by the level of support from people and bands and hope that we can continue to offer quality bands over the coming months."

Angelina added: "The event is growing in numbers and we’ve got folk coming from all over the UK again, as far afield as Southampton and the tip of Scotland. "Some have booked hotels which is good for local business and some are staying in the area with friends.

"We want Punkboot’s Bolton Picnic to continue to grow and become an established date in the punk calendar as we’re keen to continue with it."
