FANCY celebrating the summer in style? Then head for The Rock over the weekend.

Bury’s biggest shopping centre launches “Summer Days: Summer Nights” tomorrow, an events programme designed to recreate holiday memories and celebrate the summer season.

The first event is “Rock, Chips and Red Coats”, where shoppers are invited to experience a 1950s-style holiday... a time when seaside resorts were at the height of their popularity and British workers gathered their families for a bucket-and-spade break.

From tomorrow, there will be a traditional Punch and Judy show at St John’s Square running on the hour, every hour, from 11am until 3pm.

After the show, children will have the opportunity to make their own puppet.

Bury might not be a seaside town, but that’s not stopping organisers from installing an outdoor beach at The Rock, complete with children’s rides, Water Walkers, Aqua Boats and an outdoor grill. Visitors can also create their own comedy holiday snaps, courtesy of some retro holiday cut-out boards.

On Saturday and Sunday, it’s time to join two Red Coats in a fifties’ themed event as they present the very best summer fashion, hair, make-up, food and toys. Starting at 10am and running until 4pm both days, there’s a packed line-up with plenty to take part in.

Millie’s Cookies, The Entertainer, Build-a-Bear, Pum Thai, TopShop, River Island, Oasis, H&M, Simply Be, Tony & Guy, Benefit and Bare Minerals will all be there, offering demonstrations, shows and samples.

There will also be competitions with fabulous prizes over the weekend.

To create some long-lasting memories — and have a bit of fun — step into The Rock Digital Photo Booth for free. Simply dress up and pose against a retro beach backdrop, and you’ll walk away with your photo, ready to share on Twitter or Facebook.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, centre director at The Rock, said: “We want to create a holiday atmosphere at The Rock this summer and we know how much people enjoy being entertained and shopping in our stores.

“This is a perfect way to find out more about the latest products, pick up tips and talk to our retail experts while having some fun on the scheme.

“We have two more events planned in August, so look out for details online soon.”
