Re ‘Plans for cycle lane rejected’ (Bury Times, July 21) — the Kirklees Trail is a great asset enjoyed by many.

Some cyclists don’t use their bell to forewarn others they’re approaching (far too polite) and some cyclists go too fast when other users are around.

I don’t think imposing a seven mph limit on cyclists along the whole route is realistic especially for those commuting.

There are long straight stretches where visibility is good and common sense needs to prevail — those in a world of their own who want to speed should keep off the trail and get on the road.

Equally oblivious of others trail users are some dog owners who are preoccupied with their mobile phones whilst 'in charge' of their pet.

A key part of the equation is the width of the trail. The councillor stated it is three metres wide, but at the moment it is overgrown with Himalayan Balsam and brambles which make it much narrower than that.

And further south, where the trail meanders alongside the Irwell, it is exceptionally overgrown and is strewn with debris still not cleared away from the floods earlier in the year!

Obviously it costs money to clear and cut back. Despite the financial cut backs maybe the councillors and council officers could look into this solution to give everyone maximum space.
