I READ with interest the short about Greenmount Village Community encouraging local residents to be involved in helping to save Tottington Library (April 6).

I would, as a committee member of Friends of Tottington Library, like to add my voice to this plea.

The committee was formed at an inaugural meeting of concerned volunteers on February 27and is currently in discussion with the council about the level of support we can expect.

In the story it was mentioned that the council is willing to help communities save their libraries, but with 'no cost to the council'. At the time of writing it is unclear what this support will be. We are unsure how much, if any, of the current stock and furniture will be left in the building and have been told that the computers will be removed. There will only be three or four libraries left in the borough so if all the closed libraries have their stock removed how will the remaining libraries house this stock. Perhaps the idea is to have a book sale and we did note at our last meeting that there were indeed books on sale in the library - for 20p each.

In order for this venture to work we do need the support of the council as well as the community. I would note that the three local councillors have been proactive in their support and continue to be so.

We have arrangements in place for fundraising and collection boxes will soon appear in local shops. Interested readers can follow us on:
