I REFER to the unsubstantiated and erroneous comments made by John Southworth of the Greens (Bury Times, May 18) who states David Nuttall ignores the interests of Bury North residents and toes the Tory Government line to protect his reputation as a loyal party man.

I have no axe to grind, being somewhat of a floating voter and in the past being a card-carrying member of the Labour Party.

However, I have taken an interest in politics for a number of years and I support the views held by Mr Nuttall, particularly on leaving the European Union.

Mr Southworth is obviously biased and very ill informed.

Unlike the previous Labour MP, David Chaytor, who was imprisoned in 2011 for false accounting, it appears that David Nuttall is a man of integrity with high moral values who has continually promoted the interests of the business community, the working man and all of his constituents in Bury North.

Mr Southworth should take some time to look at Mr Nuttall’s voting record and take note of the type and nature of questions that he asks in the Commons.

He would then appreciate that Mr Nuttall is a very good, effective and hard-working MP who has fought hard for Bury North in Westminster since 2010.

Of course Mr Nuttall is a loyal Tory, but he is also his own man and not a lap dog merely following the party line.

He is considered to be one of the Conservatives’ most rebellious MPs who votes against the party line when ever policy conflicts with his own personal views or he considers it to be against the interests of the electorate in Bury North.

For no other reason, Mr Nuttall gets my support in this election as I can rely on him to play his part in securing a good deal with the EU in the Brexit negotiations.
