WITH respect to Cllr Alan Quinn, who put forward a motion for the council to support the introduction of a DRS scheme (bottle deposit scheme) in Bury.
Cllr Quinn has put forward a plan proposed by Caroline Lucas, of the Green Party, on May 11 to: "Ending plastic waste by introducing a bottle deposit scheme to stop 16 million plastic bottles ending up in environment every day".
The Green Party, along with many other concerned groups, has long proposed such schemes.
The meeting can be viewed via Bury Councils Live Stream dated July 5 at new.digitaltreemedia.co.uk/burycouncil/ (start 2:43 into the meeting).
Many councillors abstained from the vote.
If your councillor abstained, please ask them what they propose to do about this massive environmental problem and when they would like to see it carried out.
Cost seems to be a problem and figures quoted during the meeting suggest that the litter cleaning cost is around £1.3 million each year.
This cost does not take into account all of the litter that has not yet, and probably never will be, collected without a radical change.
While many of us do our best to recycle, it is important to put a true value on waste to aid the understanding of those who do not recycle.
A deposit scheme may be inconvenient for some, but at least there is a full deposit refund.
If your councillor has no constructive plan to solve this problem, please consider supporting and joining the Green Party for a cleaner Bury.
