TRAFFIC UPDATE: 'Multiple casualties in M6 crash'
A multi-vehicle motorway crash has caused "multiple casualties" and major congestion to Bank Holiday weekend traffic, police said today.
The crash happened on the south-bound carriageway of the M6 between junctions 16 and 17 just south of Sandbach, Cheshire.
Several vehicles were involved, and one crossed over on to the north-bound carriageway, causing a further crash.
Both carriageways were closed to traffic.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "There are multiple casualties as a result of the collision. However, at this stage none are fatal, but the severity of those casualties is still being assessed.
"It's likely the M6 will be closed both north-bound and south-bound for the foreseeable future."
Severe delays are expected in the area, and police are advising motorists to avoid the M6 where possible.

This is a accident BLACKSPOT The only solution is either put traffic lights every 2 miles or install a 40 compulsary speed limit

How would traffic lights help? It would cause even more rear end shunts! I drive that section of motorway twice a week at all sorts of different times. The best solution would be to improve the lighting and stop HGV's leaving lane 1 to drag race at 55.98mph and 55.99mph across 2 lanes. Ease the congestion and improve the visibility is what needs to be done.
