BURY student Liam Colligan is making his mark in the world of animation.

The 15-year-old has won a competition to design a new TV advertisement for the Total Fitness fitness centre in Whitefield.

Liam, a pupil at St Gabriel's RC High School on Bridge Road, came up with the design to promote exercise classes at the gym in Elm Square.

The 60-second animation is scheduled to be broadcast on screens within the club for about three months, starting in June.

Liam's teacher Nikkie Latham, head of IT at the school, said: "Liam's done a great job with software that's quite a challenge to use. But it's what businesses use in the real world, so it's great experience for him.

"The ICT course can sometimes be quite dry, with spreadsheets and databases. But this is a different part of the course which gives pupils more practical work to get their teeth into."

Liam said: "I enjoyed the project: it was fun and challenging learning to use the software and it has inspired me to study it further at college."

The pupils were given an hour each week during their ICT lessons to come up with suitable animations. These were submitted to Simon Archibald, business development manager at Total Fitness for judging.

He said: "The standard of entries was varied and so it was difficult to pick an overall winner. But now we've got one, we're delighted to be able to show it in our club. We hope the members get a smile from it and it encourages them to participate more in the vast range of classes we have to offer."

Liam, whose winning entry promotes yoga, karate and boxercise, wins a month's free membership at the Whitefield club.

The runners-up were Ruth Hatton (16) and Colleen McTear (15).
