RESIDENTS are being urged to home compost so that having a nice garden need not cost the earth.
The council has teamed up with Recycle Now to offer advice and cheaper compost bins: in Bury, some 3,852 bins have been sold since 2006.
Bosses say home composting is one of the best ways to help the environment through using kitchen and garden waste, from grass cuttings to scrunched up cardboard, teabags, vegetable peelings and coffee granules, and shredded confidential documents.
The result is a free, nutrient-rich fertiliser for the garden, and stops rubbish from being buried in landfill sites where it produces methane, a greenhouse gas.
Councillor Dorothy Gunther, executive member for environment and transport, said: "It's important that we all try to do our bit to help the environment. Composting at home is just one of the actions we can take to ensure we minimise the amount of waste we create, and the more people that get involved the bigger the difference we can make."
Bins can be ordered at the Compost Awareness stand in the Mill Gate shopping centre at Minden Parade. Alternatively, visit www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 077 0757.
