SEVERAL cars became partially submerged and a number of homes suffered flood damage after a major water mains burst in Whitefield earlier today.

A section of Oak Lane, near to its junction with Ribble Drive, collapsed as millions of gallons of water poured into the road at around 2am. Firefighters from Whitefield and Bolton used specialist pumping equipment to clear the water which caused damage to a handful of nearby homes and parked vehicles.

The road has been closed and United Utilities engineers are currently working to re-route supplies to affected properties.

A spokeswoman for the water company said: "A number of homes are currently without water or have reduced water pressure. Our engineers were on site first thing this morning to isolate the damaged water main and re-route supplies to the area.

"A team of our loss adjusters will also be in the area to advise residents how to repair any damage caused by the flooding. We apologise for any convenience caused."

Sweet home without water supplies is like a hut in the forest. It is 12.15am and still no signs of water.UU should supply water to every affected house holder and also the facility of mobile toilet.

In one respect the support offered by UU was very little. Having water supplies on the street UPTO 3pm, and then going home, just when working home owners come home....where is the logic in that !!!!
I dont think the support services (UU) had a clue what was going on, on the phone being told at 7.30pm that water trucks were not feasable as water was back up and running (where i dont know), then whilst on the phone a "local" UU worker came round with a truck full of much needed water.
The main plus point in all this was the spirit it bought out on the streets, its was first time I've seen people talking to each other and helping the elderly (something the UU team should of been doing)....nice to see all on Ringley Drive at last...lol
