THREE official sightings of UFOs have been recorded in Bury in the last decade, according to Ministry of Defence files.

The papers, released this week, reveal that local people have been baffled by unexplained flying objects in the skies.

Documents were prepared for Government ministers in case they were questioned about UFOs: however, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) was not interested in the possibility of little green men' visiting from space. It says independent experts have concluded that there are straightforward explanations behind UFO sightings, such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena.

The MoD was, however, more interested in checking that UFOs were not signs of covert spying missions by other countries.

The three reports from Bury, with logged comments, are: 1) April 4, 2000, at 5.30pm: "At least 12, small objects that were saucer-shaped. They were silver and glinting in the sun. Very erratic at high speed."

2) November 9, 1998, at 3.45pm: "One object, flames, black smoke, defined mass, unable to tell exact shape."

3) October 13, 1997, at 9.20pm: "A bright, white light. It eventually moved southwards, towards Saddleworth."

These files are the first in a series released, and people can inspect them at the National Archives.
