Police vow to stop pupil booze jaunts

POLICE in Ramsbottom have vowed to prevent school leavers from taking booze up Holcombe Hill in an attempt to prevent a repeat of last year's chaotic scenes.

Officers began the operation on Friday, confiscating about 60 cans of beer and dozens of alcopops and bottles of vodka from about 150 youngsters who were heading for Peel Tower. Most of the youths were school leavers from St Gabriel's RC High School in Bury.

Last year, drunken pupils celebrating the end of their final year of school before their GCSE exams caused mayhem when they set fire to moorland on Holcombe Hill.

Police have said they are determined to prevent the same thing happening this year. PC Kevin Day said: "Last year the moors were ablaze and there were three fire engines up there on the last day of school.

"Residents feared for their safety. This year we have the benefit of hindsight and we're going to be on guard on Friday evenings to make sure no alcohol gets up Holcombe Hill.

"Thanks to Friday's operation, we seized an astonishing amount of drink from underaged children and there were only a few minor incidents. If other youngsters are planning to drink on Holcombe Hill, it's really not worth them wasting their time and money. We're not going to let them take the alcohol up there.

"About 90 per cent of the school pupils go up there with the intention of behaving and enjoying themselves responsibly but once a certain element in Ramsbottom gets wind of it they head up there too and things can get out of hand."

l Teachers at Woodhey High School meanwhile are attempting to abolish the concept of a last day of school for Year 11 pupils in a bid to avoid drunken revelry.

Year 11 pupils taking their GCSEs this summer have no official leaving date. Instead, they will be required to attend extra classes and revision sessions in school throughout the exam period in an attempt to keep them out of trouble.

Headteacher Martin Braidley said: "There is no date for the last day of school this year. Year 11 pupils will continue to come into school right up until their final exams. They will have some days off and time to revise at home but there will be something happening in school virtually every day."

Oh my god how much do you people overexadurate you wernt even there!!!! Te police just say that to make themselves look good when they cant even do their job properly. They cant cntrol the youth in ramsbottom so they use se sly tatics like putting people on curfews and tag. All the police in ramsbottom are unreasonable because they cannot cope with the youth and use sly tatics like putting people on curfew and tag to control them. I often go into ramsbottom and see police brutality against innocent youths they are disgraceful and someone needs to sort them out!!!!!!!!

So Tom, in one paragragh you say the newspaper is exaggerating the extent of youth behaviour and then you go on to say the police can not control the youth. Get your story sorted out mate.

Well Millie by the look of your spelling and grammar you must be in year one at St Gabriels you say you "did not take that much alcohol"

At your age you should not have taken ANY alcohol.

As for another year one pupil comments by Tom yes you are right the youths are disgraceful and someone needs to sort them out.

We need more police in Ramsbottom because the youths have no respect for older people or their property.

Cars get damaged, trains on the ELR have bottles and bricks thrown at them and while in Ramsbottom the other evening when the school bus pulled up one lad jumped off and opened the rear engine compartment and then came out with a load of verbal abuse to the driver.

The trouble is there is no deterrent today the police should be a free hand to sort these youths out once and for all.

Judging by the spelling mistakes and general inability to write a comment of the school leavers. Maybe they should be staying in school a few more years. I think that is the real offence being committed here

They said Peel Brow Secondary was a bad school & so built Woodhey to replace it.
From what I see Peel Brow was miles better.
Yes we did drink but kept it in the pubs.

Paul & Bob, you read my mind regarding the above comments. They say they want to be treated as adults but when it comes down to it they are much happier blaming everyone else around them for their misgivings & then still sit whining on about how hard done by they are & how different they would be if they were left alone but its evident that youths are getting worse & worse... OH! Did I mention that by law you have to be 18 to consume alcohol?? Enough said I think!!

I'm a member of St.Gabriel's year 11 and was there on the hill that night. To be honest, instead of complaining about our school, you really should take a look at Woodhey for trouble makers.. If there was any trouble on the hill, it was caused by idiots from Woodhey following us around all night shouting abusive language. One of my friends left early and went home, because a girl from Woodhey threatened to "knock her out" for no particular reason. So next time, I advise that you don't waste your ink on stories that are quite purely unnecessary slander against our school. Thanks :)

I also am a member of St Gabriel's school, and I too was up there on the night. I did not take alcohol or drink that night. Me and my friends sat on the hill and did not cause any trouble. I would like to point out that the police themselves said ""About 90 per cent of the school pupils go up there with the intention of behaving and enjoying themselves responsibly." Therefore I find it disgraceful that there are comments on this page generalising us all as "the youth of today," basically tarnishing everyone with the same brush, so to speak. "Paul from Ramsbotom" goes as far as to say "the youths are disgraceful." No, we are not disgraceful, in fact he is, for making accusations about people he does not even know. He cannot possibly claim to have met all the youths of Bury, and therefore how does he find it acceptable to generalise us all with one sentence?
In future, people should think before they make unfounded accusations against us, and yes they are unfounded as they have never met us. I wonder if any of you were actually there on the night? If you were not there to witness the incident then please do not judge it.
Thank you.
Helen.

Excellent news - I hope English is high on the agenda judging by the spelling on some of these posts.
Lets hope this initiative is not disrupted by teacher training days and any more strike days

WE were teenagers not long ago. I'm 50 and it's no different than when I was a teenager, about 10% of youngsters being yobbish and ruining the innocent good times of the rest of them EXCEPT in my day the police were vigilante and wheedled out most of the bad uns, teachers and parents were stricter too, there was more discipline and respect all round. Sadly for whatever the reason that isnt the case nowadays and ALL the kids get punished when the majority are innocent, no wonder a lot of them resent and ignore rather than respect and listen to most adults.

Also you didn't have Bury schools coming to Holcombe. They celebrated near their schools.

Just wait until the summer holidays when these kids are out in force with all their mates, drinking, shouting abuse, intimidating adults passing by, pushing each other in the road, smashing bottles leaving glass where children should be safe to play and generally causing upset and nuisance to local law abiding residents! Mind you this goes on now but it will just be worse by the summer! I would just love to get the names and addresses of these kids and get all my mates to sit outside their parents houses and behave in the same manner that their own kids do and see how they like it!!

Nik, Rammy says...

In fact it wouldn't be a bad idea to start a name and shame blog!! If most of you kids are sick of being tarnished with the same brush then why not name and shame those who cause the trouble and make an attempt to nip it in the butt now?!!! Nothing will get done by moaning about it!

Well said Nik, I've defended the innocent majority but they should help stop the trouble instead of just moaning that we adults condemn all of them. Name and shame the trouble makers.

Well Les, I think you missed another few points, and thats how rude, badmannered, disrespectful and ignorant many young people are today. I've worked with, helped and supported young people for forty years and I have observed how standards of decency have deteriorated over the years. My generation wouldnt have dreamed of calling an adult an idiot. Tombraider you are like I used to be, idealistic, but the next generation will be even worse, you mark my words and just to prove my point no doubt some young darling will send some insulting response to this opinion.

Its like an episode of Jeremy Kyle on this comments page!

There is no harm in enjoying yourself and letting your hair down at the end of school but using Beer, Vodka and whatever else you can get your hands on is very sad.

SAD that you need to get totalled to have fun. SAD that WANT to get leathered.

Take it from me. You look and act like a dumb **** when your drunk. No one thinks its cool!!

If school taught you nothing, start your true education now and learn quickly that alcohol is not your friend!!
