Africa trip spurs Al on to help

WHEN kindhearted Al Thomas took a month-long trip to Africa last month, he underwent a life-changing experience that prompted him to launch a campaign for poverty-stricken youngsters.

While doing voluntary work in Ghana, Al (31), of Seddon Street, Radcliffe, met children as young as six whose lives were at risk as their parents couldn't afford vital surgery.

Now back at work at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich, Al has persuaded friends and colleagues to put their best feet forward in a bid to save the lives of more children.

He has organised two dance nights at the Longfield Suite, from which all the profits will go to good causes in the Ghanian town of Obo, where Al got his inspiration.

Al, who is a duty manager at the venue, said: "The month I spent there was a real eye opener and it was definitely a life-changing experience and something I will never forget.

"I met one child who was very sick and needed an operation that his family could never afford. It was £150. A friend of mine paid it and it is now going ahead. There are so many simple and cheap things like that we can do to make a real difference."

While on the trip, Al taught children English at a local school and played football with them, which he described as a memorable moment.

The first event takes place between 7.30pm and midnight on May 24 and features dance troupe Gordon Wright and the Wright Sound, performing ballroom, salsa and others forms of dance. Tickets cost £6.
