FAIRFIELD General Hospital in Bury will keep its children’s observation and assessment unit closed until the end of this month.

The centre has been shut to in-patients since mid-December, due to the transfer of several children’s nurses to help in the children’s units at North Manchester General and Royal Oldham hospitals.

It has meant that children going to Fairfield who need to be admitted have been cared for at North Manchester or Oldham.

A paediatric doctor is still based in Fairfield’s accident and emergency department to treat sick children between 9am and 11pm, when the assessment unit would normally operate.

The situation is expected to be reviewed at the end of the month.
