College ranked in England’s top 10

THE principal of Holy Cross College has praised staff and students after it was named among the best colleges in England.

Government league tables rank the college in 10th place based on the A-level results achieved by students in August last year.

It is the eighth year in a row that the college has been named among the top 10 in the country.

Winstanley College in Wigan took first place in the league tables.

Principal David Frost said: “It is greatly to the credit of our wonderful staff and students that Holy Cross has once again been placed in the top 10 colleges nationally for A-level results.

“We are justly proud that we achieve this accolade year after year while welcoming a wide range of abilities and young people from Bury and all the surrounding boroughs.”

At the Manchester Road college, 96 per cent of students achieved three or more A-levels at grades A* to E. There were 107 students who achieved three As or better and 325 students who earned three A* to B grades.

And Mr Frost believes he has found the secret to ensuring success at the college.

He said: “Holy Cross has always been sought out by those gaining the highest grades, aspiring to Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and law, but also welcomes those of more modest achievements, from all backgrounds and faiths, who want to achieve to the best of their potential.

“That is the secret of our success: we are more interested in the grades our students go out with, than the grades they come in with.

“It is true that high-flyers do phenomenally well here, with more than 100 students getting AAA or better this year once again.

“But all our students are individuals, and we rejoice as much over those who have found education difficult in the past, but experience success for the first time at Holy Cross.”
