UNSWORTH Primary School pupils hit top note when they won Bury Hospice’s school choir competition.
The children sang I’ve Got Rhythm, Electricity and Chattanooga Choochoo in a grand final held on Friday at Victoria Hall in Bolton.
They wowed the judges and picked up the winning prizes — a trophy and tickets to a family concert by BBC Philharmonic at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in June.
Music teacher Katie Geelan said: “The children worked really hard in preparation for the event and put in lots of extra practise. They were fantastic. They couldn’t have done better. They were superstars. I’m really proud of them and their hard work has paid off.”
The choir secured their place in the final after taking part in a heat held at Radcliffe Civic Suite.
In the final, they faced the choirs from St Mary’s RC Primary School, Radcliffe; St Hilda’s CE Primary School, Prestwich; and St John With St Mark CE Primary School, Bury.
They scored the highest marks after impressing the panel of judges, made up of Paul Jarvis, from Bury Music Service, Claire Warner, the hospice’s capital appeal adviser, and Maggie McDonald, Halle Choir’s vocal coach.
The final also included the debut performance by Bury Community Choir, which is funded by Bury Music Service and mainly made up of people working for Bury Council.
Sarah Brealey, the hospice’s event fundraiser, said: “It was a wonderful night. Everybody enjoyed themselves and the choirs were fantastic.
“It has raised a few thousand pounds for the hospice, which we are very pleased with.” All pupils performing in the final received a chocolate medal and certificate, and badges were given to every child who sang in the competition.
