Lightning-hit church's new 'Flash Gordon' poster makes fun of its weather disaster

PARISHONERS at storm-damaged St Andrew’s Church in Ramsbottom have been seeing the brighter side of a lightning strike, with a banner encouraging people to join them in their temporary school hall home.
Motorists and pedestrians passing the railings outside St Andrew’s Primary School, at the junction of Bolton Road West and Nuttall Lane, have been chuckling at the advert, which was inspired by the rock group Queen. The banner features lightning bolts and the lyrics “Flash A-ha, Saviour of the Universe” from the 1980 Flash Gordon movie theme tune.
The church, which lost a pinnacle from the tower and suffered extensive internal damage last month, is likely to be unusable until well into next year, with 11am Sunday services being held in the adjoining school instead.
The curate at St Andrew’s, the Rev Steve Openshaw, said: “Whilst the lightning strike was not ideal, the important thing is no one was hurt and we wanted to let people know the life of the church goes on and we are still here,”
“We can see a funny side now and hope the banner reflects that.
“Anyone who wants to join us is welcome – especially Queen fans!”
A blog has been set up for people to follow the rebuilding process at the church visit connectst andrews. word press.com.
