20mph speed limit plan for Bury's roads gains momentum
A MAJOR plan to make the borough’s roads safer by introducing 20mph speed limits is to getting into gear.
Earlier this year, Bury Council tabled a proposal to set a 20mph speed restriction on all roads in the borough, except A roads and motorways The idea received universal backing from councillors and town hall chiefs have spent the last three months working on the detail.
The Streetsafe scheme is now being rolled out and the first two areas to benefit are the Rudgwick Drive area of Brandlesholme and the Bent Lane area of Prestwich.
Local authority chiefs wrote to all homes in those areas as part of a three-week consul-tation process.
As there was no opposition, the work will go ahead “at the earliest opportunity,” a Bury Council spokesman said.
Other consultation schemes are under way in 16 areas and information packs have been sent to 8,600 properties.
Those areas include dozens of streets in the Redvales Road area of Gigg and almost 100 streets in the Turks Road area of Radcliffe.
The project is costing £750,000 and could take several years to complete. The council spokesman said: “The Streetsafe strategy includes proposals that will make it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport instead of their cars.
“Streetsafe aims to make our neighbourhoods better places to live and encourage communities to get out and about more and lead healthier lives. The strategy will also expand road safety training in schools.
“It is expected that 20 or more schemes (covering clusters of streets) should be operative before next April.”
