Pakistan Day celebration
DIGNITARIES gathered outside Bury Town Hall to witness the hoisting of the flag of Pakistan.
The event, which took place in the town last Wednesday, marked Pakistan Independence Day and guests included Bury North MP David Nuttall, his Bury South counterpart Ivan Lewis, Mayor of Bury Cllr Sharon Briggs, Bury Council chief executive Mike Kelly, council leader Cllr Mike Connolly and members of the Bury Pakistani community.
Afterwards, guests adjourned to the town hall for speeches and light refreshments. The event was organised by Liaqat Ali, chairman of Bury’s Islamic Centre, and Cllr Tamoor Tariq, who represents the Redvales ward of Bury.
Mr Ali, who has been a well-known figure in Bury’s Asian community for many years, was very pleased at the significant turnout for the flag hoisting ceremony.
He said: “About 50 people attended the event. Apart from MPs and those representing Buy Council, we had community leaders and other distinguished guests.
“The speeches later were basically about the creation of Pakistan in August, 1947. This is a very important and significant annual event for those in the Pakistan community.
“I think its importance is underlined by the fact the local authority took part. And the ceremony was also important in terms of community cohesion. I was pleased at the number of guests who took part.”
