A DEVELOPER is being sought by Bury Council to build and operate a hydro-electricity generating plant on the River Irwell.

It would be located on council-owned land at Chamberhall, and may provide a competitively priced source of low-carbon energy to nearby properties on the business park.

The winning tenderer will be offered a six-month exclusivity agreement followed, if the development proceeds, by a lease on the site with an initial term suggested at 25 years. Developers will be responsible for producing detailed proposals, obtaining all necessary consents, constructing and operating the hydro site, abiding by all relevant legislation and ensuring the viability of the plant.

This is Bury Council’s second venture into renewable energy production following the installation of the photovoltaic array at the Bradley Fold depot and follows similar hydro projects in Stockport, Salford and Rochdale.

Cllr Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “We need to address our carbon emissions and explore new ways of generating revenue.

“Renewable energy projects address both these agendas and we’re on the lookout for further opportunities.”
