Brandlesholme stages first scarecrow festival
THE judges have finished their rounds and anticipation is high ahead of an action-packed scarecrow-themed fun day.
Keen to keep community spirit high, residents of Brandlesholme are staging their first ever scarecrow festival.
It began last Friday, with 53 scarecrows going on show between Springside View and Woodhill Road.
Inspectors have cast their expert eyes over each and every one — including Jack climbing all the way up the “beanstalk” and a blooming good plumber.
They will give their verdicts and hand out awards to the most weird and wonderful creations at a harvest family fun day at All Saints Church in Hebburn Drive from 1.30pm to 4pm on Sunday.
Deirdrie Watson, one of the organisers, said: “The past few days have been absolutely hectic and exhausting, but fabulous. Brandlesholme has really buzzed.
“Neighbours who have never spoken to each other before have chatted and laughed.
“The sun even shone when the judges went round and I could not count the number of people who have participated in the scarecrow trail, which is looking extremely good.”
The fun day will include a scarecrow parade, a ‘silly science spectacular’ show and lots of stalls, animals and games in the church grounds.
Inside the church, there will be a performance from percussion act Bocho Ashe, a yoga demonstration, a children’s fancy dress parade, a show from children’s entertainer Wacky Woody and the scarecrow prizegiving.
At St Francis House, there will be a Scalectrix grand prix and a cake-baking contest.
