'Careless' motorist killed Whitefield pensioner by reversing over her in car
A DRIVER killed a Whitefield pensioner after he reversed his car over her in a “moment of carelessness”.
Usman Hussain, aged 39, hit Surinder Kaur Singh while reversing his Renault Languna from the footpath into Cheetham Hill Road near Knowsley Street at about 2.30pm on October 31 last year.
Mrs Singh was taken to hospital but died a short time later.
Hussain, of Egerton Road South, Chorlton, had earlier admitted causing death by careless driving at Manchester Crown Court.
He was today sentenced to a 12-month community order to complete 250 hours of unpaid work, was banned from driving for a year and was ordered to pay £1,000 costs.
PC Paul Hailwood said: "A moment of carelessness cost Surinder her life and consequently devastated her family.
“Usman Hussain himself is not a bad man but he has to live with the consequences of his actions - he has her death on his conscience and a criminal record.
“Tragic cases such as this reinforce the absolute need to be 100 per cent focused at all times when you are behind the wheel of a car.”
