Fun day could be at core of community
1:50pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
A community group is hoping to attract the core of the town to an apple day.
Incredible Edible Ramsbottom is holding the event at Nuttall Park on Sunday, October 13, with all manner of apple-related activities on offer.
Some of the attractions will include an early airing of apple bobbing before Halloween, a competition to see who can create the longest apple peel, as well as the chance to press your own apple juice.
The group was set up in February, 2010, and aims to encourage people to grow their own food and eat local produce.
Simon Ladds, from the group, said: “It is all about the community working together and about self sufficiency.
“We are trying to get people to grow their own food so they don’t have to go out and buy from the shops.”
They have several plots across the area, including the formerly derelict Holly Mount orchard in Greenmount, where apples for the day have been grown.
Mr Ladds said: “Holly Mount is where the group started and it has been producing lots of apples, so we are using them at the event, and it just shows what you can do.”
Other activities at the fun-filled day will include face painting, arts and crafts, and refreshments including home made crepes, chutneys, cakes and pies.
Organisers say the show will go on whatever the weather, as gazebos will sheltering visitors from the elements, and the group hopes as many people as possible will turn out in support.
They previously held an apple day at Nuttall Park in 2011 which attracted a good attendance, and hope to attract new members.
He added: “We have had quite a few new members at the moment. We have always struggled, but over the last six months we have done quite well.
“We have a few spots around Ramsbottom and we wish we could do more.”
The apple day will run from 1pm to 4pm. For details visit incredible edibleramsbottom.co.uk.
