A WOMAN was smashed in the face with a wine bottle, cutting her lip and knocking her unconscious.

The 23 year old was attacked on Bury New Road, Prestwich, at about 12.30am on October 27.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

The woman had been enjoying a night out with three of her friends at the Red Lion pub in Bury New Road and left to get a takeaway from the Spice and Grill restaurant.

As she left the takeaway, she and her friends were verbally abused by a man and a woman who was sat inside a car parked up outside.

The woman and her friends walked off singing Manchester United football songs, but noticed the car - thought to be a metallic grey Audi A3 - was driving slowly alongside them.

Eventually, the woman who was driving got out of the car at the former site of HPL motors on Bury New Road, where a new supermarket is currently under construction, and struck the 23-year-old in the face with a wine bottle.

This caused a serious cut to the woman's upper lip and she was also knocked temporarily unconscious as a result of the blow.

She was later treated in hospital and needed stitches to close the wound.

The offender is described as being possibly of mixed race, with long, straight dyed blonde hair, of a medium build, 5ft 7in to 5ft 8in tall and aged between 25 and 35.

The man sat with her in the car was said to be Asian, but played no role in the attack itself.

Detective Constable Martin Brown, of Bury Police, said: "There appears to be no motive for this appalling and violent attack on a young woman, other than the offender has taken exception to something that was said and taken it upon herself to resort to totally unacceptable levels of violence.

"Such was the ferocity of this attack, which involved a glass bottle, that the woman suffered a nasty cut to her lip and was knocked unconscious.

"Thankfully, the injuries were not worse - anytime a weapon is used it has the potential to cause serious and life-changing injuries so we need to find the woman who committed this senseless act.

"I would appeal to anyone who either witnessed the attack itself, or perhaps saw the initial altercation outside the takeaway, to come forward.

"If you have any information about what happened we need to speak to you."

Call police on 101.
