A PATIENT discharged from hospital was rescued hours later after becoming stuck in a river.
Firefighters helped to rescue a man, aged in his 50s, after police raised alarm.
The man was spotted by a passer-by in the River Roch near Fairfield Hospital.
Police attended and found the man in difficulty in the water off Jericho Road, Bury at about 11am on Saturday.
An air ambulance was drafted in to assist but the man was taken to hospital by ambulance.
They were able to rescue him but were unable to get him up the embankment to safety. He was suffering from suspected hypothermia.
Firefighters from Bury used a rope to transport the man.
Watch manager Pete Fletcher, from Bury Fire Station, said: “We had to use rope rescue equipment and hauled him up the bank. The river was approximately 50m from the nearest path. It was quite a physical incident. Once we had got him out of the river it was quite a way from the nearest road. We probably had to carry the man about half a mile.”
The man was taken to hospital for treatment. Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour.
