Boxing world title fight could be held at Bury FC's JD Stadium

Bury FC has been granted a concert licence — which could see it a host a world title boxing fight.

Champion Scott Quigg has declared it would be the “best night” of his life if he could defend his title in front of a home crowd at the town’s newly named JD Stadium.

Talks are to get under way between his agent and promoters in the hope that Scott can take part in an outdoor bout at the soccer ground in Gigg Lane next year.

The move comes after Bury FC secured a licence to allow the stadium to host 10 outdoor events a year.

On the possibility of fighting at the home of the football club, 25-year-old Scott said: “If it could happen next year, it would be great. I would love to defend my world title there. That would be really exciting and everyone in Bury would turn out for it. It would be the best night of my life.”

Anthony Leaver, a spokesman for the boxer’s promotion company, Matchroom, said: “While this is something we’re really keen to do, it wouldn’t be able to happen until the post football season next year. It’s great that Bury FC are keen to do it and I believe Bury Council would support a fight.

“It’s something, should all the pieces fall into place, that possibly could happen. We need to know what the new year will throw up.

“At the moment, we are not close to knowing what Scott’s next move is.”

A spokesman for Bury FC said: “A request has been granted for a concert licence.

“As part of future planning the club would like to hold a Scott Quigg fight at the JD Stadium, but there are no firm plans in place to do so at the moment.

“Talks will take place between Scott Quigg’s agent and promoters at the earliest opportunity.”

Last month the Bury boxer retained his WBA super-bantemweight belt. Scott now wants to become a double world champion in 2014 and is also earmarking a “battle of Britain” clash with Northern Ireland’s Carl Frampton.
