Tributes after sudden death of popular Holy Cross caretaker

Bury Times: Andy Holden Andy Holden

TRIBUTES have poured in following the sudden death of a popular caretaker at Holy Cross College.

Andy Holden, aged 49, suffered a cardiac arrest on November 30 and died a short time later.

He was known to thousands of Bury students past and present, as he had been the college’s health and safety manager since 2003.

A former Army serviceman, a keen Manchester city fan and an enthusiastic badminton player, Mr Holden, who had lived in Moston, will be remembered for his smile and friendly approach.

Colleagues described him as “one of the most popular, respected and well known members of staff who has epitomised everything the college stands for.”

A Holy Cross spokesman said: “All members of the college community would like to convey their deepest sympathy to Andy’s family and also to express their great sorrow at this tragic, sudden and unexpected loss.”

Principal David Frost said: “Andy was a wonderful colleague and a consummate professional, who brought calm and good humour to everything he did for the college.”

Michael Greavy, who teaches chemistry at the Manchester Road college, said: “When I first arrived at Holy Cross, I didn’t know many people and felt a bit awkward.

“However, there was always someone I saw often, someone who always greeted me with a warm smile, a laugh — Andy.

“I felt the place was less imposing because of him.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will never be forgotten.”

Careers adviser Lisa Harrington said: “I can’t put into words how much I will miss his cheeky smile and chuckle.

“Staff nights out just won’t be the same without him there.”

RE teacher Francesca Fell added: “I really enjoyed it when Andy came into our office for a chat. He was just good fun.

“I’ve been telling our students about him and what a noble profession he had — to make the building safe for the people in it.

“I’m so shocked and sad we have lost him.”
