PUPILS across the borough have improved their performance in the annual league tables for primary schools.

The tables show how children aged 10 and 11 performed in English and maths standard attain-ment tests (SATS) this summer.

Results show 87 per cent of the 2,050 youngsters who sat the English test achieved level four — the recognised standard — above last year’s 85 per cent and national average of 85 per cent.

And 86 per cent who sat the maths test achieved level four, higher than the Bury figure of 85 per cent from the previous year, but below this year’s national average of 87 per cent.

Overall, Greenmount Primary came out on top based on the highest level four performance in English and maths and then taking into account the number of children at each school who sat the exams.

A new feature this year is a measure that takes into account how well children do in reading and writing along with English and maths.

Among the schools that excelled in the new field were All Saints Primary in Whitefield and St Mary’s Hawkshaw. Both achieved a 100 per cent grade.

Bury Council’s assistant director for learning Ian Chambers said: “These results again show that primary pupils in Bury are continuing to receive an excellent education. It is pleasing to note that both the results for English and maths have improved since last year, and are either above or close to the national average.

“It means that young people in our primary schools will be well prepared when they move to secondary education. ”
