SPROUTS will definitely be off the menu in future for some staff at a Ramsbottom business who failed in their bid to create a new world record for the number consumed in one minute.

Seven brave diners at Clock Creative attempted to equal or beat the current record of 31 sprouts eaten in 60 seconds.

But the record was not in any danger of being broken after the highest number achieved was 20, eaten by Gareth Taylor.

But the festive-flavoured challenge produced one winner — that was the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, which will benefit to the tune of £200.

The amount raised by the sprouts challenge — undertaken at the brand and digital communications company’s site in Square Street — was based on the highest total consumed by a staff member at £10 per sprout.

Ann Rimmer, Clock Creative chief executive, said: “Our colleague Tom Dyson cooked all the sprouts and there were 32 on each plate. Unfort-unately, we failed miserably to beat the record.

“We thought we’d go ahead with the sprouts challenge because it was something seasonal and a little bit different. I don’t care if I never eat another sprout again.”

The event was streamed live via Twitter on video and viewed by 36,000 people.
