OWNERS of a petrol station are set to discover if they can sell alcohol round the clock.

Jersey-based Rontect Watford Ltd can currently sells alcohol from 6am to 11pm daily at Longsight Service Station in Longsight Road, Greenmount.

The firm has asked Bury Council for permission to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

However, two North Manor councillors, Cllr Dorothy Gunther and Cllr James Daly formally opposed the application, so Bury licensing panel will make the final decision at a town-hall meeting at 1pm on January 20.

Cllr Daly said: “I shall be attending the meeting and making some strongly worded representations to the panel. In my view, there is bound to be a negative knock-on effect if you allow people to buy alcohol 24 hours a day.

“There could be some people who decide to get into their car late on and buy alcohol before driving home and causing anti-social behaviour and there is also the possibility that it will lead to drink-driving.

“There is the chance that it will lead to people gathering outside the premises.”

A Bury Council report says police withdrew their representation after meeting the firm and “an agreement being reached”.

It adds: “The entrance door to the shop will be closed to customers between midnight and 6am.Any sales between these hours will be made through the night-pay window.”
