Ramsbottom’s Labour councillor Joanne Columbine has resigned.

Mrs Columbine was elected in 2011 in extraordinary circumstances, after drawing lots against her Conservative rival Robert Hodkinson, with both candidates having polled 1,822 votes each.

Her victory led to Labour taking control of Bury Council.

The details of a by-election will be announced on Monday.

Cllr Columbine hit the headlines this week when she criticised a knitting campaign which provides hats to troops in Afghanistan that is run by a Conservative MP and councillors.
