A COUNCILLOR has opposed plans to build a tennis court in Hawkshaw.

Bury planning committee will decide at a meeting in the town hall at 7pm on Tuesday if Mr John Roberts can build the court on green belt land at Hawkshaw Hall in Hawkshaw Lane.

He also wants permission to build a new access drive and to keep two animal shelters that are currently not covered by planning permission.

However, councillor Ian Bevan has formally objected. In a council report, he wrote: “This is the fifth application in the past three years at the site and there will be significant overdevelopment there.

“The construction of a new access, tennis court and fencing is inappropriate development in the green belt.”

In the report, council planning officer Helen Longworth said the access drive would effectively replace the existing one so it complies with council policy and the shelters were screened by trees.

She added: “Each application has been assessed against the relevant policy with any cumulative effect being considered in the relevant reports.

“The tennis court would be appropriate development within the green belt.”

Ms Longworth recommended the committee approve the application.
