CROSS Lane in Radcliffe is set to reopen later today, a week after it was closed last Wednesday when a vacant pub's roof collapsed, trapping a 36-year-old man inside.

The road has been closed in both directions between Park Street and Butterworth Street since around 4.30pm on Wednesday (January 29).

A council spokesperson said work was now completed to the structural scaffolding and it was hoped the Cross Lane would partially reopen this afternoon (February 5).

One lane of the road will reopen to traffic this afternoon and is to be managed with temporary traffic lights.

It is believed the man was checking the structure of the building, formerly The George pub, before buying it to turn into four apartments.

He was rescued by police and taken to hospital  but his injuries are not thought to be serious.

One woman, a resident of the house adjacent to the pub in Cross Lane, was evacuated from her property but has now been told it is safe to return.

Building contractors are currently in the process of buying the property from the current owners.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have carried out a formal investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson for Bury Council had previously said it was hoped the road would be reopened within 48 hours.

A police spokesman said: "The police attended and cordoned off the area for the safety of the public.

"The man had scans for his injuries but at this time they are not of major concern."
