TWO schools sited on major traffic routes in Radcliffe are set to benefit from the introduction of advisory 20mph speed limits.

The part-time speed restrictions will be put in place over the next few months, as part of Bury’s StreetSafe strategy, and will affect five other schools in the borough.

Council officials say flashing amber hazard warning lights will be used on the approaches to schools - in the mornings before school and in the afternoons at the end of the school day.

At other times, when the warning lights are switched off, the advisory speed restriction will not apply and the limit will remain at 30mph.

Cllr Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “Slowing motorists down can make all the difference if a collision should occur.

"A child has a much better chance of survival if they are hit by a car travelling at 20mph rather than 30mph: that’s why introducing these new limits and improving road safety for our young people is really important.

“So, if you are a motorist that travels in these areas at these times, the message is simple: slow down, always look out for pedestrians and remember that speeding is not only dangerous, it can have disastrous consequences.”

The locations in Radcliffe are at Stand Lane: near to Chapelfield Primary School, and Bury Street: outside Radcliffe Hall Primary School.

Bury StreetSafe strategy was launched in February 2013, aimed at improving road safety in residential streets and estates.

Currently, sixteen 20mph zones have been or are in the process of being introduced and a further eight - including the Smyrna Street area - are currently under consultation.

The Woodley Avenue area and the Bolton Road and Turks Road estates were made part of the 20mph scheme last year.
