MEMBERS of the Bury band Elbow have thrown their weight behind a campaign to save a venue which helped to launch their music career.

Night and Day, in Oldham Street, Manchester, has received a noise complaint from a neighbour, and the venue fears it could be closed by Manchester City Council.

Elbow played the Northern Quarter venue in 1998 at the In the City music conference which was established by the late Factory Records boss and Granada TV presenter Tony Wilson.

A petition has been set up by the venue in an attempt to remove the nuisance notice which has been enforced by the council. Within days of the petition being set up, it received more than 60,000 signatures.

Guy, from Prestwich, took to his Twitter account, urging people to “help out this very important venue”.

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Courteeners frontman Liam Fray and Tim Burgess of The Charlatans have offered their support. The petition, which was set up by promoter Gareth Butter-worth, says: “This one resident has lived here for less than one year and his threat could end an independent-run business which has been a firm staple in the Manchester arts scene for two decades.”
