A TOP photographer from Bury is helping potential camera enthusiasts follow in her footsteps.

Elaine Constantine, aged 48, has been taking photographs for almost 30 years, working for top style magazines such as The Face, i-D, Vanity Fair and Vogue.

Elaine recalled how her big break in photography came when, during her time at Bury Camera Club, a fellow enthusiast recommended a college course.

That led her to an apprenticeship with leading fashion photographer Nick Knight, and then to university.

Now, Elaine is coaching the next generation of photographers.

As part of this year’s Noise creative arts festival, Elaine took part in an online ‘masterclass’ to pass on her knowledge to photographers still learning their trade.

Applicants had to submit a portfolio of work to the festival organisers and the best eight were chosen to take part.

Elaine said: “It’s great to be able to give people the same kind of help I got when I was at that stage and, now, with the internet and all the resources and opportunities open to aspiring photographers, there is the potential to do these kind of things.

“It is a pleasure be a part of Noise Festival, which nurtures upcoming talent in a range of disciplines.”

In 2012, Elaine changed tack and decided to direct a film, called Northern Soul, about a genre of music that inspired a sub culture to bloom in the UK.

The film is due to be released later this year.

She added: “Despite changing industries, I definitely think there are still opportunities for photographers coming through now, but things are a lot more competitive and there is an onus on people to be the very best they can be.”
