A WORKMAN is in hospital after he was crushed by iron gates at a quarry in Ramsbottom.
Two employees working at Marshalls, off Manchester Road in Shuttleworth, became trapped while trying to secure a metal gate at the plant in high winds.
One man, who suffered serious injuries to his face, pelvis and head, had to be airlifted to Wythenshawe Hospital.
He has now been transferred to North Manchester General for rehabilitation.
The other man, who had suffered leg injuries, was taken to Fairfield Hospital for checks and was released the same day.
The Health and Safety executive is now investigating the incident.
The gate, which is at the entrance to the plant, weighs 660kgs, or 103st.
The men were trying to make the gate secure when the strong winds blew it off its hinges.
A spokesman for Marshalls confirmed that the incident had happened on Friday, February 14 at the Ramsbottom Concrete Manufacturing site in Shuttleworth.
He added: “Marshalls is committed to the health and safety of its employees and has an excellent health and safety record.
“Marshalls very much regrets any injury to its employees and is carrying out a thorough investigation into the incident.
“Marshalls wishes those involved in this incident a speedy recovery.”
A North West Ambulance spokesman added: “Two men were trapped under a gate, but by the time we got there the gate had already been removed.
“We sent a rapid response unit, two ambulances and an air ambulance.”
