THREE musical teenagers are following in the footsteps of the town’s rock royalty — by creating a beer to launch their debut album.

The Rocket, a three-piece Prestwich rock group, will follow Bury behemoths Elbow by releasing their own beer and raise a glass to the release of their first album, entitled In Emergency, Break Down.

The group have worked with brand new Bury brewers, Silver Street Brewing Company, to create a beer inventively entitled Rocket, which is described as a “zesty golden ale with a tropical aroma”.

Ironically, the group, who are all aged 17, will not be able to raise a glass to their success legally.

The band’s frontman, Kieran Sproston, promised not a drop of the beer would pass his lips.

He said: “If Silver Street were a person I’d high-five them. It’s actually quite a strange idea when I think about it — I’m legally too young to consume a product with my stamp on.

“I’m sure my friends will make up for that though.”

The release of their album comes after two years of support from The Met, helping them to record at Edwin Street Studio, bagging performances at The Met and Ramsbottom Festival, and now putting them in touch with Silver Street, which is run by the team at The Met’s Automatic Cafe.

David Agnew, director of The Met, added: “We are really proud of what The Rocket has achieved and are delighted that our infrastructure in Bury to support new music and art can create such a great result.”

The inspiration for naming their band came from Elbow’s 2011 album Build a Rocket Boys, and Elbow also produced a beer of the same name, and recently created a new beer named Charge.

Rocket is the fifth ale from Silver Street Brewing Company, which made its debut at Bury Beer Festival in November, 2013, and is also associated with The Clarence in Silver Street due to open in September, 2014, after refurbishment.

The Rocket will launch their new album with a concert at The Met on Friday, and the Rocket beer will be available at the Automatic Cafe and Malt, both situated in The Met.

Tickets cost £6, available by visiting themet.biz or calling 0161 761 2216.
