YOUNG employees at a Ramsbottom social enterprise are fast becoming experts in not just hospitality but first-aid too.

Glen Duckett, landlord of The Eagle and Child pub in Whalley Road, employs and trains disadvantaged young people who want to get into the food and drink industry.

Now, a Ramsbottom life-saving expert with more than 30 years experience under his belt has been chosen as the social enterprise’s first-aid trainer.

Last month Malcolm Sweetlove, of Windermere Drive, Ramsbottom, taught The Eagle and Child’s latest batch of trainees using his self-designed interactive role play course.

This sees candidates resolve scenarios by interacting with an actor who plays out different conditions and illnesses.

Malcolm, who is a retired assistant head teacher of Blue Coat School in Oldham, said: “I helped Glen because of my background as a senior teacher — I always worked with youngsters who needed that bit of extra care and experience.

“Being local to The Eagle and Child, it’s a good community development and life-saving skills are essential within a service setting.

“The youngsters showed great skill and commitment. The interactive role play really works because it makes people think, gets adrenaline pumping, encourages teamwork, requires problem-solving, needs action and is really great fun.”
