RUNNERS stepped out at Burrs Country Park in Bury to go the extra mile for charity.

The Sport Relief Mile was staged on Sunday and among the runners were staff, children, parents and childminders from St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Graves Street, Radcliffe.

Fifty people from the school took part and have so far raised £750.

The Mayor of Bury Cllr Sharon Briggs got the run under way.

Fairfield Community Primary School, in Rochdale Old Road, Bury, ran the fancy dress “Fairfield Mile” which has so far raised £200.

Headteacher Chris Ashley, who dressed as English cricketer W.G. Grace, said: “It took our breath away seeing these children push themselves as far as they could go.

“Everyone ran with a smile on their face. It was a lovely morning and I’m glad we did it.”

A mass Sports Relief exercise session was held by pupils at Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom.

They took to the school’s all-weather sports surface for a tough workout — and 1,067 of them took part.

Leading the session was PE teacher Becky Horne, who took along her five-year-old daughter, Beth, to show off some dance moves.

Ms Horne said: “It was absolutely brilliant. Everyone ended up with a huge smile on their face.

“We had them exercising along to music by Bruce Springstein, The Killers and Jessie J and I was using a megaphone to keep everyone motivated.”
