CAMPAIGNERS against the controversial drilling technique ‘fracking’ held a meeting in Ramsbottom which was attended by around 60 people.

The Bury Against Fracking group met members of the public and answered their questions at the Eagle and Child pub in Whalley Road last Wednesday.

Short films were screened and there were speeches from representatives of protest group Frack Free Greater Manchester.

The group is concerned that fracking, which involves drilling to produce shale gas, could be used in areas of Bury and Ramsbottom because there are large deposits of shale gas under much of Lancashire.

John Burgess, a representative for the group, said: “We explained the practice of fracking and how it could affect the area, and answered lots of questions from members of the public.

“We were not there to convert people. We just wanted to give them the facts so they could make up their own minds.

“It was a great success and another public meeting will be held in a larger venue soon but thanks must go to the Eagle and Child for allowing us to use their room.”
